TRICKSTER 2027 on “Echoes”
Nestled among the cliffs just past Abiquiu Reservoir, you can stand in front of a bowl in the earth, speak, and listen as your voice rolls up the red-streaked walls and makes its way back to you. The aptly-named Echo Amphitheater’s unique auditory properties make for a fun afternoon and the best game of karaoke in New Mexico.
But echoes are more than sound returning; they are the ways that moments, memories, voices, and experiences continue to reverberate long after their source.
In New Mexico, we are surrounded by echoes. We see the echoes of the stars as we gaze at the night sky, and of history in the faces of our ancestors and the murals we pass by every day. The songs of the past vibrate through our chests like drumbeats, and settle deep into our bodies, becoming almost physical as they ripple through us.
But the echoes that shape us aren’t always the ones we can hear. Some echoes travel through generations before someone finally listens. We hear our elders as we follow the paths their words of wisdom have paved for us. We see them in the mirror as we face our reflections, and feel the truths of their reality. Their journeys live on in us, our families, our communities and the very earth beneath our feet.
Echoes don’t only come from the past. They carry forward into the people we are becoming, shaped by the choices and changes we make today. We see those echoes in the faces of our children, in their hopes and possibilities, and in the future we imagine for them.
As you look around, consider the echoes that surround you. What reverberates in the words, actions, minds, and hearts of your community? What do you repeat without knowing where you first heard it? Whose voice do you hear when you speak? How many versions of you are still echoing somewhere?
Tricksters, resonate with your echoes and immerse yourselves in these moments. Find yours, and share them with us.
